Unity in Diversity: An Invaluable Asset

Never before have I felt the true meaning of diversity and its value more than now. This feeling is not out of disgust or any revolt, but purely out of trying to understand the very foundation of any organization in its growth phase. Partly, we can also say that the idea of diversity has become global. To start, let me be a bit critical in order to raise a point of view of how sometime we mix up this idea of diversity with various other definitions. We sometime tend to say," Yes, I know, we are all one though we are different !! " But the very question is, " Do we really act in its true meaning of what we say and understand?" We need to ask that question to oneself very carefully. To be honest, I did not realize its true importance some years before. For me - it was just a "nine lettered" word. That is all !! However, I begun to ask myself what is that different "inside attitude" that makes me think, act, behave or function differently? Over the years of confusion, I slowly begun to realize how we live in a sea of people from different background, culture, faith, food habits and language. Name it - very different, until we try to understand !! This realization drove me toward the path so I could refine my outlook of "What it is" & understand its true essence, so we could be in a position to nurture the very meaning of peaceful existence.

Again, let us ask ourselves some basic question, "What is Diversity?" We know it meaning but let us get a standard definition. Merriam - Webster dictionary defines the word "diversity" as "the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization". Then, there comes second question, "why do you think this idea of recognizing diversity is so important?" I do not know how others feel about it but i can tell of myself - it is only through your personal experiences that you can tell its "unconditional" importance to improve team work and work culture. No other generation of youths have seen such an advance in the field of information technology or in transportation. Now, we are in an excellent period of human history, that we have started saying it as one global village, we have started to forget that there exist political boundary, we have started saying, " we are the world and we are the children" This sounds so beautiful but on & off, this remains to be tested against our greater motive through tolerance and compassion.
Somebody great said," Strength lies in difference, not in similarities" I heard this saying years back, I did not understand it inner meaning at that time and I did not care much to understand what does it mean? Now, i have started to realize, its importance in helping me fathom the very meaning what it is trying to say. It is a common norm, people enjoy conformity and a bit get distracted when one has to face dissimilarities / difference in your way of thinking, daily way of living, point of view and even more, if this has to do with your language, faith or food or pride. Many volumes of books have been written trying to address these basic foundation of human thought, some vocal for conformity through language or religion or even technology, while some segment speaks for the beauty we find in diversity.

In order to nurture the diverse nature of any community/country or even an organization, we have to have a simple process of linking people at every level. Let us consider, each individual as "dot" in a wider space. Each "dot" has attributes that relates to at personal, social or philosophical level, which we need to try understand. It is only in understanding these attributes or trying to understand, we can connect those widespread "dots" and form a beautiful pattern, which can be beautiful or when all these pattern work in unison, we can create soothing music that are good for soul - harmony. To simplify, let me borrow some words of modern management and create a "MANTRA", which can be in short be said "3 Cs". If we understand each C and implement in our daily life, we can at least harmonize our daily activities with others around you.
  1. Communication
  2. Coordination
  3. Cooperation
Finally, let me end here by sharing with you all recent break through in understanding how micro - organism communicate with each other. It is reported that bacteria also talk to each other through chemical signals. This subtle phenomenon can be called as CROSSTALK. I like this word because it fits to my way of thinking that we need to talk to each other and listen to what others have to say. I can even say, we should not only listen to reply but listen to understand what others have to say. This way, we can live in harmony so we can form a strong network of different individuals interacting with each other. This is what i understand of a term TEAM. It is only in unity among diversity that we can flourish and achieve that are considered impossible. After all, Impossible say I + M + POSSIBLE.
