Being Thakali Youth: my definition

For few days, I was pondering over a constant thought, what it is to be as a Thakali Youth in changing socio - political landscape of our country. Here, I will only touch upon being a "Thakali Youth" in Nepal. It is my duty to clarify upfront to all readers that our values and culture associated with being Nepali is indispensable. This it bottom line !! However, we also have our own indispensable cultural values that are near and dear to us. All these values are inherited from our birth. It is this socio - cultural heritage that we breath and cry for so its roots are strong enough that no event or onslaught will shake us. I am longing for its strength and vitality since few days as always. I also realize that we will be like "a fish without water gasping for air" if we do not take it into serious consideration. Here, i would like to share a bitter truth that we should all be very careful and cautious of changing trends in Nepal. Last week, I read an article that talks about a serious topic on language and politics of nationalities, which is brewing in Nepal. One phrase that made me think twice was like this, "CORRUPTION OF THE SOCIETY STARTS WITH THE CORRUPTION OF LANGUAGE"  Somewhere, i thought, may be, this statement has a partial truth or may be, this is not relevant. I do not want to go into detail now, however, it made me believe and assert based on current state of Thakali language that it could be a partial but not a whole truth. Here, i would like to leave you readers to ponder on the above phrase a bit in connection to being a Thakali and our language almost getting lost in memory. With this slight disconnect, I would say that I am not in position to define what it means to be a Thakali youth. Instead, I will share some salient points that I think all Thakali youths should strive to achieve and keep their social network intact and strong through use of their social skills, which can always be improved. Thakali Youths means, for me:
  1. S/he speaks Thakali language fluently
  2. S/he is independent by the age of 20 years and take whatever small job for learning and experience.
  3. S/he has visited or plans to visit Thak Khola and volunteer some social work to understand Thakali way of leaving.
  4. S/he works hard to excel in education and decides on his / her career by age of 16 - 25 years of age.
  5. S/he takes parts in social works - Intra Thakali or extra - Thakali communities.
  6. S/he does not bear extreme political or religious doctrine that are harmful to community well being.
  7. S/he is suggested to join Toastmaster Rotaract club or other clubs to develop leadership skills
  8. S/he builds professional or social social network
These are some points, I like to share among Thakali youths. Now, it is ripe time that we take active leadership role in local, regional, regional and international arena. I see, it is happening and this can happen more if we work hard and understand & help each other.

All the best and Horchhe!!
